The Beginning of Our Family....

Maudie Ruth Rolader married Lenard Hinton Holcomb on August 17, 1940. These were my parents. Momma said she was 12-years old the first time she saw daddy and he was 16. It was in a one room schoolhouse (Alcova School). She said that daddy said he knew the first time he saw her that he would marry her someday. She says she didn't...haha. She said daddy was one of those mean Holcomb boys. Apparently they were all known for mischief. She said she wasn't sure she wanted to marry him to start with, but then she decided she didn't want to be without him either. They lived with his parents when they were first married, along with several other people I believe (one of whom was a Clack man - related to my grandmother) who appeared to have been a little "off".

I'm not sure where momma lived before she married daddy, I believe her family moved around a bit. Daddy lived in the same house he was born in on Alcova Road (near Alcova Baptist Church) in Dacula.

They were both members of Alcova B.C. Daddy's family were mostly Methodists at the time, and momma said he showed up to his baptizing without anyone or even a towel. Someone loaned him a towel. She remembers feeling sorry for him that day. Both sets of my grandparents are buried at the church.

Momma said that in those days most of your dates consisted of going to revivals and other church services. She said that even in those days (in the 30's) boys were bad to "try" something. She said she had several try. The night she told daddy she'd marry him after all they went to church with Kelly and Parlee. She was sick that might because of her "monthly" and she found out later they all thought she might be pregnant (having to go out sick, and telling him she'd marry him in the same night - haha). She wasn't however. Joyce didn't come along until fourteen months later.

Most of the stories I remember are from momma. Daddy didn't talk about things like that an awful lot. I do however know a little about their conversion experiences.

Daddy's was in the black church. He said that he would sometimes walk to the black church together. He appeared to enjoy their preacher more than his own. So that was where he was saved.

Momma was saved in a field. She said they'd been having meetings that week, and she wanted to go down, but she was very timid and shy. So she went out to the field and felt so burdened that she dropped down on her knees and prayed right there by a stump, she said she came up singing with peace in her heart.
