Momma's Side...

My mother was born 2/12/1924 to Alenor (not sure about spelling) and Garland (Cobe) Rolader, Sr. She was the middle child, Maudie Ruth. She had two older sisters Dorothy and Viola, and a younger sister Hattie Lee and a younger brother Garland, Jr. Although she has died all of her siblings are still alive.

These are the grandparents I actually remember. My grandfather died when I was seven years old. My mother said that he used to tell them he would spank them when he got home, and they always knew that he would. The only things I can really remember about him was that he had a black dog and used to give me money (usually a nickel or quarter) to feed the dog when I was there. My older sisters (especially Joyce) said they remember that he was bad to kiss them on the mouth (ugh), however, my grandmother put a stop to that. They used to live in an old farmhouse without an indoor toilet. They had an outhouse back behind the house. When my grandfather died my grandmother moved into an apartment in downtown Lawrenceville until an opening came up in the local senior apartments and she moved there (it was a duplex). My grandmother I remember very well. I was 16 years old when she died. I used to go spend a week with her in the summers. Everything was always spic and span at her house. She used to fix angel biscuits, have vegetable soup for me and homemade strawberry cake. There was a railroad right behind the duplexes and at night the trains would go by and wake me up. She had a few vegetables planted around her clothesline posts in the back yard. In the front yard around the sidewalks she had all kinds of flowers planted. She used to get me to help her water them in the summertime when I visited and always gave me a quarter. She dipped snuff, although she was very neat with it, wore stockings rolled down on her thigh, always wore dresses and had very long hair that she braided and wore twisted together on the back of her head. She was a very ladylike woman even though she dipped snuff, I never heard her say a bad word that I can remember. She used to get aggravated with her neighbor who was a heavy woman with very large breasts whose dress was always dirty (where she dripped things on herself). However, she was a very nice woman and my grandmother thought a lot of her.
